combat / ATTACKING

Otherwise known as Attacking, Combat is an essential action in the game, whether you attack a monster, a door, or another wayward player. Here is a step-by-step example of how to run Combat in the game.


GAMEMASTER:
Your party of three Players have encountered four brain-eating Zombies. They immediately attack you!

The GM places four Zombie figurines on the map surrounding the Players: Moe, Larry and Curly.

He also reveals the Zombie Monster Card and presents it to the players.

The kids immediately grab it and study the monsters’ stats.

CURLY:
I attack the Zombie with my Trident!
LARRY:
Me too!

GAMEMASTER:
Hold on. They got the jump on you and attack first.
The first zombie is closest to... Curly. He attacks with a roll of...

The GM looks at the monster card and sees that the Zombies have a “To Hit” of 16 or above. He rolls a d20.


GAMEMASTER:
... 17. He hits Curly with a vicious bite!
Do you have any Armor, Curly?
CURLY:
Yes. My awesome Eagle-claw Shield.
I have an Armor of 1!

GAMEMASTER:
Ok. The Zombie's Damage Die is a d4. [rolls a d4]
It does 4 points in Damage, minus your 1 Armor.
3 total Damage to you. Oof.
GAMEMASTER:
Yes. The other three Zombies are inching closer to you,
but you can attack Zombie #1 who just bit you.

Curly grumbles and updates his Character’s “Current Hit Points” on his Character Folio from 5 to 2 HP.

CURLY:
Ok. Fine. Now my turn.

Curly looks at his “To Hit” on his Character Folio and reads a 14. He has to get a 14 or above to hit. He picks up a d20 and rolls.

CURLY:
I got a 16. That's a hit. My Trident's Damage is d6+1.
[Curly rolls a d6 with a result of "4"]
Four plus one. That's 5 points in Damage. Take that, Zombo!

Curly takes the dry-erase pen and fills in five of the Zombie’s Health Bubbles on the Monster Card.

GAMEMASTER:
Great. Zombie #1 has 2 HP left. Moe? Larry you wanted to attack, right?

Larry looks at his “To Hit” on his Character Folio and reads a 16.

He picks up a d20 and attacks.

LARRY:
20! Critical Hit! Double Damage, baby! My Mace does d4 Damage. [rolls a d4 twice] Three and a one. 4 points Damage on the Zombie.

GAMEMASTER:
With a ringing metallic swoosh, Larry lops off the Zombie's head. It falls to the ground with a big thud. It is dead. How about you, Moe? Attack the next one?
MOE:
No. Curly's hurt. I'm gonna cast a Healing Spell on him. It's d6+1. [rolls a d6] Two plus one. Three points.

GAMEMASTER:
Good job, Moe. That's very nice of you.
Curly is back to full health and ready
to take on the remaining three Zombies.

Moe finds the “Heal” spell on her Character Folio and ticks off a box, indicating she has used one of her three uses of the spell for the day. Curly smiles and proceeds to give Moe a big hug.

CURLY:
Thanks, Moe. You're the best!

That is one complete Turn.

Repeat the same back and forth with the party for the next Turn….
